Products And Services

  • Ait Conditioning Maintenance

QUALITY YOU CAN DEPEND ON Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. HOW DO I KNOW I NEED AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE? You know you’re overdue for service by the time your air conditioning is blowing warmer air than usual. We recommend checking your air conditioning system every spring. Check your owner’s manual or ask your Quality Tune-Up service adviser to determine when your car needs a change of fluid. WHAT DOES AN AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE INCLUDE? We inspect the drive belt for wear, visually inspect the system components for any obvious leaks or damage, check the operation of the compressor and advise you if any further repairs are needed. Our qualified mechanics use special equipment to evacuate the old refrigerant, vacuum test the system for leaks and recharge the system using the amount and type of refrigerant specified by the car manufacturer.

  • Air Filter Maintenance

Quality You Can Depend On Air filter maintenance is a routine check that is easily overlooked. Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. How do I know when I need a new air filter? You can check your owner’s manual for recommended intervals, but the easiest way to tell is by looking at the filter. A good rule of thumb is to replace the filter every other oil change. There are two types of air filters in your car. The engine air filter is under the hood, while the cabin air filter is inside the vehicle (often behind the glove compartment). Why change the engine air filter? The engine air filter captures dirt and dust before they can enter the engine. Keeping your components clean contributes to your engine running more efficiently. A clean air filter allows uncontaminated air to pass freely into the combustion chamber of your engine. This also makes your engine run better, cleaner and use less gas. What about the cabin air filter? The air that passes through your climate control system is filtered for dust, pollen, mold spores and other particulates to keep your cabin clean and the air you breathe uncontaminated. A dirty filter puts stress on the climate components and does not effectively filter the air. Our qualified mechanics will check your filters free of charge any time you are in for service. We replace your worn out filter with a clean new filter made for your car. Benefits A clean engine filter allows your engine to run efficiently and saves gas. A clean cabin filter lets you and your family breathe easy.

  • Brake Repair

Where can I find reliable brake repair in San Jose, Fremont and Milpitas? Quality Tune-Up & Car Care offers brake repair you can depend on. We have six convenient locations to serve you in the South Bay Area--including San Jose, Fremont and Milpitas. How often should I bring my vehicle into Quality Tune-Up & Car Care for brake repair? We recommend having your brakes repaired and serviced by a professional mechanic at least once a year. At Quality Car Care, we take brake repair very seriously. (Check out our brake care tips) What is part of a brake inspection? A brake inspection is when a technician takes off the tires to get a closer look at the various brake components. A thorough brake inspection includes: Checking the brake pads for wear and tear Checking the level of brake fluid Measuring the thickness of the rotor Monitoring the condition of hoses and brake lines A test of the brake lights What are the benefits of brake repair and brake maintenance? Brake repair is a safety measure. Without properly working brakes, normal driving situations would take a turn for the worst. However, there are other benefits in getting routine brake service and brake repair. Changing your brake pads, when needed, saves wear on your rotors, which translates into less money spent down the line. At Quality Tune-Up & Car Care, we always strive to achieve your 100% satisfaction. No matter the service, from brake repair to tune ups, we are eager to have your vehicle running in its peak performance. What are some brake terms/parts I should be familiar with? Brake fluid--Stopping a car depends on hydraulics, and brake fluid is literally the system’s lifeblood. Pushing the pedal forces fluid through the lines, causing components to expand against the wheels, stopping the vehicle. How often your brake fluid needs to be replaced depends on a number of factors, such as your driving habits and environmental variables like heat and humidity. Most vehicles don’t offer gauges or sensors to track brake fluid, so having your fluid inspected by a certified auto mechanic is crucial. Brake pads--Made from a variety of metals, brake pads squeeze the rotor whenever the brake pedal is pushed. Brake pads typically last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles, perhaps much longer with high quality brake pads. But even if you aren’t watching the odometer closely, brake pads are designed to alert drivers when they’re wearing thin. A small metal piece pings or “chirps” when it makes contact against the brake disc. Warning: Listen for that squealing, otherwise you could do serious damage to your brakes. Paying attention to and acting on cues like these help keep routine services from mutating into major repairs. Calipers--Part of a disc brake system, calipers push the brake pads against the rotors when the brake pedal is pushed. This resulting friction between the pads and rotors slows--and ultimately stops--the vehicle. Waiting too long to replace worn brake rotors puts extra stress on the calipers. The calipers will rub against uneven rotors if the components aren’t parallel to one another, creating a vibration that can be felt in the steering wheel during stops. Drums--These bowl-shaped components use springs to expand the brake pads against the inside of the drum. This style of brakes is typically found on the rear of trucks or sedans. While drums produce a substaintial amount brake dust, the majority of the grime hides behind the drum's covering, which means less gunk on your rims. The brake drum is typically made of cast iron, a material that conducts heat well and resistant to wear. So why are drum brakes usually found on the rear wheels? “Drum brakes are cheaper and take less hydraulic force to activate. When you stop your car most of the braking is done by the front brakes because of weight transfer--why you feel pressed towards the front when you hit the brakes,” said Nathan Kaemingk, a technical specialist for Cummins, Inc. “[Drum brakes] are more susceptible to warping and brake fade. They're worse at cooling, and more likely to need cleaning and adjustment for optimal operation than disc brakes because a lot of the dust from brake shoes stays inside the drum.” Rotors--As the name implies, these metallic discs rotate as the wheels are in motion. Rotors sit behind the wheel assembly and can sometimes be seen through the vehicle’s rims. Pressing the brake pedal activates clamps on both sides of the rotor. Friction created during braking produces searing heat that eventually scars the rotors. While they can be resurfaced, rotors eventually reach a point where replacement is the only option. Rotors should be checked during a tire rotation or multipoint inspection.

  • Engine Belt

Quality You Can Depend On Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. What is a serpentine belt and when should I have it replaced? The serpentine belt drives most of the power assisted components of your car including the air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, water pump and alternator. When it shows wear it's time for a replacement. The number one mechanical reason for roadside assistance is a broken serpentine belt. How does Quality Car Care help me avoid having my serpentine belt fail? Our trained mechanics visually inspect your serpentine belt every time you come in for routine service such as an oil change or scheduled maintenance. We will let you know when it needs to be changed. Benefits When your serpentine belt gets worn it no longer grips the pulleys of the components it drives properly. This may cause your alternator to not charge your system the way it should or your power steering to be jerky or your A/C compressor to run at less than full power. Keeping the belt in good condition helps all of the components it drives work better and helps you avoid on the road breakdowns.

  • Engine Coolant

Quality You Can Depend On Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. When should I replace the coolant in my car? Most manufacturers recommend replacing the coolant periodically to avoid expensive repairs. Your service adviser can tell you when your car needs new coolant. Why does it need to be replaced? The coolant in your car keeps the engine cool during the summer months and keeps the fluid from freezing in the cold of winter. The fluid naturally breaks down from constant use and no longer provides the protection you need. In addition the fluid becomes very corrosive and, if left unchanged, it will destroy the components of your cooling system. What does the coolant replacement service include? Our trained mechanics inspect the system for leaks and damage prior to replacing your fluid. We pressure test the system for leaks and to make sure your radiator cap is sealing correctly. Because the serpentine belt drives the water pump we also check it for wear and replace it, if necessary, at an additional cost to the service. Benefits Properly maintained fluid keeps your engine running cool in the summer and keeps it from freezing in the winter. Even more importantly, it keeps corrosion out of your cooling system.

  • Factory Scheduled Maintenance

Scheduled Maintenance To Depend On Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. When is my car due for regularly scheduled maintenance? Your owner’s manual clearly states when factory scheduled maintenance is due and what should be done. Your service advisor can print a list of factory maintenance requirements for your car upon request. What about my new car warranty? Your new car dealer would like you to think only they can maintain your warranty by doing factory scheduled maintenance. Not so. Our trained mechanics will keep your warranty maintenance current at a fraction of the cost of taking your car to the dealer. What types of cars does Quality Tune-Up service? We service all makes and models from Acura to Volvo and everything in between. Benefits Full service auto repair is provided by our trained mechanics. Many are certified by the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Quality you can depend on. Most routine service performed while you wait. No need to leave your car for the day unless you want to leave it. Quality and convenience. Lower cost. We don’t have the same overhead as a dealer so we can do the same service for a lower price. Quality for less.

  • Fuel System Maintenance

Quality You Can Depend On Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs a Fuel Injection service. If that is the case we are ready to perform any fuel system maintenance you may need. When should the fuel system in my car be cleaned? We recommend cleaning your fuel system whenever we change a dirty air filter or fuel filter or when we perform an engine tune-up. Why should I have the fuel system cleaned? Over time your injectors, intake valves and cylinder heads get dirty. Carbon and varnish deposits from the combustion process keep your engine from running efficiently resulting in lower miles per gallon. What does the fuel system cleaning include? Our trained mechanics inspect the system for leaks and damage prior to cleaning the system. First, a special cleaning additive is put into your gas tank. Then a second chemical is run through your engine using a vacuum line hooked to your fuel line. What about the fuel filter? When your fuel filter gets clogged it affects the ability of the engine to receive the proper amount of gasoline to function. If it is completely clogged the engine will not run at all. Changing the fuel filter is a separate service that may be recommended by our qualified mechanics when it is needed. Benefits Better engine performance and increased miles per gallon.

  • Multipoint Inspection

Multipoint inspections are a vehicle's equivalent of you getting a physical from a doctor. And, like physicals, they should happen fairly routinely. Simply put, a multipoint inspection lets you know how your vehicle is holding up. The added benefit is a multipoint inspection can sometimes spot a problem before it turns into a major repair. At the very least, a multipoint inspection helps you anticipate what major services would be advisable during the next few months. We suggest asking for a multipoint inspection during an oil change because it just makes sense. The vehicle is already in the shop and on a lift, so every vital component we would inspect is easy to see. Don't just take it from us. “Oil changes and routine multipoint inspections are the foundation of preventative maintenance,” said Patricia Serratore, senior vice-president for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). “An inspection focuses on the key systems and can prevent a vital repair from catching you off-guard.” Multipoint inspection is a general term for a thorough evaluation of the vehicle. Each individual observation (testing tire pressure, checking the brake lights) accounts for a point. Fluid levels, brake wear, battery strength, and the condition of the engine's belts and hoses are all closely examined. You'll receive a report of our inspection's findings and recommendations. We'll also help you prioritize what services might need to be done in the near future, and what can wait for a while. Besides getting a multipoint inspection during an oil change, we also strongly suggest getting one before a long road trip. Ideally, your vehicle should get three or four multipoint inspections a year.

  • Power Steering Repair

Power Steering Service That Works Our trained mechanics check your car for safety and let you know if it needs any additional service to be properly maintained. When should I replace the power steering fluid in my car? By the time you start to hear squealing when the wheel is turning or the wheels begin to turn in a jerky motion it is past time for a change. Our qualified mechanics test your fluid free of charge when you come in for service with a chemically treated paper that indicates if the fluid needs to be replaced. Why does it need to be replaced? Like most of the fluids in your car, power steering fluid breaks down from constant use. Once it begins to break down it leaves deposits in the components of your system. These deposits cause excessive wear and can result in expensive repairs when a major component fails. What does the power steering fluid replacement service include? Our trained mechanics thoroughly inspect the system for leaks and damage prior to replacing your fluid. Benefits Properly maintained fluid keeps your power steering working correctly. It prevents component failure and helps prevent the need for expensive repairs.

  • Severe Driving

What are considered severe driving conditions? If you’re like most people the phrase severe driving might make you think of dusty road races across hot desert sand or climbing steep mountain passes in the dead of winter. Your car manufacturer has a different definition. Here are a few common indicators: If you drive in stop and go traffic every day. Driving in temperatures over 90 degrees or under 40 degrees. Taking mostly short trips lasting less than 10 minutes. Towing a boat or trailer. Starting your car several times a day after the engine has cooled. In our area this type of driving happens every day: Short trips to the market, temperatures over 90 degrees, driving in stop and go traffic. Most drivers in our area are driving in severe driving conditions! Why does it matter how I drive? Recommended service intervals vary tremendously depending on how you drive. Just two examples: 2003 Honda Accord 2.4L Normal: 12 months or 12,000 miles Severe: 6 months or every 5,000 miles 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer 4.2L Normal: 12 months or 12,000 miles Severe: 3 months or 3,000 miles Check your owner’s manual or ask your Quality Tune-Up service advisor about the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals for your car. Severe driving is not all that severe. For drivers in our area, it’s just everyday driving.

  • Smog Check

Is it time for your Smog check? It’s good to know that smog technicians are always on duty at Quality Car Care. And rest assured, all our Smog technicians are ASE certified — they’re trained experts. Thankfully, most cars pass the smog test — but if your car fails, Quality Car Care is authorized by the State of California to make those adjustments or repairs at each location. These services are provided for most cars and light trucks. And remember, there is never an appointment necessary at any Quality Car Care shop. Drop by any of our four locations in San Jose. We also have service centers in Fremont and Milpitas. What is a Smog Check? In 1984, California initiated Smog tests as part of a statewide campaign to reduce air pollution, especially in the Los Angeles area. These tests determine the amounts and types of pollutants coming out of your vehicle’s tailpipe. The test involves connecting a hose to the vehicle tailpipe. Exhaust fumes are analyzed by computer and compared against limits set by the State Air Resources Board. The California Department of Motor Vehicles requires a Smog check every two years. It also requires a Smog check if you sell your vehicle and it is more than four years old. Additionally, Smog Check results offer insights into your vehicle's overall health. What Are Reasons My Vehicle Might Fail a Smog Check? There are a variety of reasons a vehicle may not pass inspection. It takes a trained expert to sleuth out the cause of the problem. Worn out parts could cause your vehicle to fail a Smog test. For example, loose or corroded distributor wires in older vehicles could be the reason for test failure. Fortunately, such issues are easy to spot and simple to replace during routine check-ups. A vehicle could fail also fail a Smog test simply because it does not have fresh oil and filters. Ask your service advisor how often you need to change the oil, oil filter and air filters to assure peak performance. Malfunctioning injectors or a faulty oxygen sensor could also be the culprit. Of course, there are more complex reasons for a test failure. Rest assured, our certified technicians have what it takes to get your vehicle running smoothly again. How Do I Keep My Vehicle Healthy Between Smog Checks? Complete any manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance between inspections. Regular maintenance addresses problems such as loose hoses, old spark plugs and engine tuning. Use the grade of fuel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. It helps the engine burn fuel more efficiently and cleaner. Call your service advisor immediately if you see a “check engine” light. This may indicate a serious problem with the emissions control system or sensor that has worn out. In either case, don’t bother going to the SMOG station—your vehicle will not pass the test. Any Other Advice? Don't worry. We're here for you, whether you pass or fail. But remember, pretty much every well-maintained vehicle will pass a Smog check. In other words, staying on top of routine maintenance is the easiest way to avoid surprises come Smog test time.

  • Transmission Repair

How do you know when it's time to change your automatic transmission fluid? Check your owner's manual or ask your Quality Car Care Service Adviser for recommended intervals. Your driving habits can influence the mileage between changes (see severe vs. normal driving). At Quality Car Care our qualified mechanics test your transmission fluid free of charge anytime you are in for service. What does an automatic transmission service include? We use a pressure system to force out the old transmission fluid and replace it with new fluid or we drain the fluid through the transmission drain plug and refill it to the correct level. What if your car has a manual transmission? Our qualified mechanics test your fluid with a chemically treated pad to determine if it needs to be replaced and replace it as needed. What about the transmission filter? Depending on the condition of your fluid and your mileage the filter may also need to be changed. This service involves removing the transmission pan and replacing the gaskets as well as replacing the fluid. Your Quality Car Care service adviser can tell you if you need a new filter. Benefits Transmission fluid wears out over time. Because it lubricates one of the most important parts of your car changing it regularly will help your transmission last longer with fewer repairs.

  • Tune-Up

Why are tune ups important? Regular scheduled tune-ups can drastically improve the efficiency of your vehicle’s engine. When your car, light duty truck or SUV is properly tuned, all components of your vehicle’s engine are efficiently working together. Just think, one spark plug misfiring half of the time can reduce fuel economy by 7% and two can reduce it by 20%. Routine tune-ups are an essential part of car maintenance and auto repair. Where should I go for a tune-up in the South Bay? Well, we are biased on this one, but Quality Car Care offers exceptional car maintenance and auto repair services in San Jose, Fremont and Milpitas. No matter the tune-up service, our team of expert mechanics are here to help. What does a tune up service include? We’ll check how the ignition, emission and computer systems are operating, as well as install new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor or electronic coils. All tune-ups include labor to install parts and any necessary adjustments. Drivability diagnostics (if necessary) may be extra. (Internal or sealed carburetor adjustments not included.) At Quality Tune-Up, we always strive to achieve your 100% satisfaction. No matter the service, from tune-ups to auto repair; we are eager to have your vehicle running at its peak performance.
